Credit invoices on refunds: how it works in Modulus

Updated Available on every plan

Short answer

Yes, Modulus issues credit invoices automatically: when you set an order’s status to "Refunded", a credit invoice is issued against the original invoice through the same invoicing service that issued it (Morning, EZcount, iCount, or Rivhit). The refund itself is made with your payment provider, because changing the status doesn’t move money.

Before you start

  • A connected invoicing service (Morning, EZcount, iCount, or Rivhit) that issued an invoice for the order. Connect an invoicing service
  • A paid order.

A refund and its credit invoice, step by step

  1. Step 1: Refund the money with your payment provider

Make the refund in your provider’s dashboard (or by transfer, if the buyer paid you directly). Modulus doesn’t return money.

  2. Step 2: Open the order and set its status to "Refunded"

    Where: Orders›The order›Status›Refunded

You see: "The customer gets an email that the order was refunded. Note: the status doesn’t return money itself; refund it with your payment provider."

  3. Step 3: The credit invoice is issued

Modulus issues a credit invoice for the amount not yet credited on the order, against the original invoice, and it appears under "Documents" on the order page. The buyer gets an email that the order was refunded.

Frequently asked questions

Does Modulus issue credit invoices automatically?

Yes. When you set an order to "Refunded" and "Issue automatically after payment" is on, the credit invoice is issued on its own against the original invoice.

Does setting the status to "Refunded" return the customer’s money?

No. The status emails the customer and issues a credit invoice. You return the money with your payment provider.

Why wasn’t a credit invoice issued?

Check "Documents" on the order page: if the original is a receipt, no credit invoice is issued; if automatic issuing is off, the document waits there; and if the invoicing service was disconnected, reconnect it and click "Retry issuance".

Is the credit invoice sent to the buyer?

The buyer gets an email from the store that the order was refunded. If you turned on "Also email the document from the invoicing service", the service sends them the credit invoice too.
