How to connect your own domain to your Modulus store
Updated Available on: Starter, Growth, and Enterprise
Short answer
In Modulus you connect your own domain under Settings → Domains: enter the domain, add the DNS records Modulus shows at your domain provider (an A record for a root domain, a CNAME for a subdomain such as www), and click "Verify". Once the status is "Live", the store opens on your domain, and its Modulus address keeps working.
Before you start
- A domain you own, and access to its DNS settings at the provider you bought it from. You can’t buy a domain through Modulus.
- A paid plan: your own domain is available on paid plans (Starter and up).
Connect the domain
Step 1: Open the domain settings
Where: Settings›Domains
The "Domain Settings" card shows your current "Store URL" on Modulus.
Step 2: Enter your domain and click "Connect"
Where: Custom Domain›Connect
Type the address exactly as shoppers will, for example www.shop.com or shop.com.
Step 3: Add the DNS records at your domain provider
Under "DNS records" you see the records for your domain, with Type, Name and Value. Copy them as they are into the DNS settings at your provider.
Step 4: Click "Verify"
Where: Verify
When DNS points correctly, the status turns "Live" and the store opens on your domain. If the records haven’t updated yet, the status is "DNS pending" or "Verification pending": Modulus also checks again on its own once a day, and you can click "Verify" again any time.
Which DNS record to add
| The address you connected | Record | Name |
|---|---|---|
| Root domain (shop.com) | A | @ |
| Subdomain (www.shop.com) | CNAME | www (or the subdomain’s name) |
| When ownership must be verified | TXT | As shown on screen |
Good to know
- One address: Modulus connects exactly the address you entered. If you want both shop.com and www.shop.com, set up a redirect from one to the other at your domain provider.
- The Modulus address keeps working: the store stays available at its Modulus address, and once your domain is live it becomes the store’s main address.
- Hebrew domains: for now only domains in Latin characters can be connected.
- A domain connected to another store: Modulus asks you to add a TXT record named _modulus-verify to prove ownership, then click "I’ve added it, connect again".
- If the domain stops working: the store stays on your domain for 3 days; if the problem isn’t fixed, it falls back to its Modulus address until DNS is fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a domain through Modulus?
No. Buy the domain from a domain registrar, then connect it under Settings → Domains.
How long until the domain works?
It depends on your domain provider and how long DNS takes to update. Once the records are updated, clicking "Verify" turns the domain on, and Modulus also checks on its own once a day.
Will the store’s old Modulus address stop working?
No. The store keeps working at its Modulus address. If you disconnect the domain, the store stays open there.
Do I need a paid plan to connect a domain?
Yes. Your own domain is available on paid plans, Starter and up. The plans
